On Sunday, August 31, 2013, the Festival will present it's 4th Annual "Sankofa Sunday" celebration where we will look back to remember those in the local and global community that have transitioned since our last Festival in September 2013.
Mwalimu Kabaila, Founder of Congress of African People, an online Facebook community of over 10,000 members, serves as host of this important event. He is pictured below where he poured libations and read the names of those that had transitioned. Jai Jai Kambasa and Rene Fisher-Mimms provided traditional African drumming.

UCLA Professor Scott Brown, author of "Fighting For Us: Maulana Karenga, The US Organization an Black Cultural Nationalism", provided the historical significance of Sankofa Sunday. He then left the stage to join with the audience who gathered in a circle.

The festival uses the Sankofa principle to look back and remember those that have transitioned and bring forward the good that they contributed so that we may go forward with wisdom.
"Sankofa Sunday” is an interactive, and communal event, therefore, the public is invited to write the name(s) of their loved ones that have transitioned in the
past 12 months and to place their names in a basket to participate in this remembrance celebration.
It's important to note, that this is cultural and not a religious
ceremony and people of all faiths and beliefs are welcome to
participate.
Ashe (so be it).
